‘Life for a Child’ – saving children’s lives worldwide

Last night’s Zoom meeting attracted a total of 25 members and friends! We were treated to a presentation from our very own member, Dr Paul Benitez-Aguirre. Paul spoke primarily about the ongoing work of the charity ‘Life for a Child’ which provides young people – in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities – Type 1 diabetes treatments.

Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong condition requiring daily insulin injections, blood glucose monitoring, education and specialist health care and access to life-saving treatment is often difficult to achieve in under-resourced countries. As a result, many young people die soon after being diagnosed. Those that do survive often develop complications, such as eye damage and kidney failure. This is where Life for a Child steps in. They partner with diabetes centres in these under-resourced countries to provide young people with the insulin, supplies, diabetes education and support for local health professionals. Through these partnerships, they have supported over 21,000 young people living with type 1 diabetes worldwide.

Paul trained as a Paediatric Endocrinologist, Paediatrician and works at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in the position of ‘Paediatric Endocrinologist – Staff Specialist’. If you would like to donate to Life for a Child please do so by clicking here: Life for a Child
