Emeritus Professor Ed Davis is National Vice President and NSW President of ABC Friends and a Member of the Resolution Institute. He is a passionate advocate for well-funded, strong and independent public broadcasting.
The ABC faces formidable challenges. It has steadily lost funding over the past 30 years in real terms and as a proportion of government revenue. There are strident calls for its privatisation. Its investigative journalists face threats of prosecution. And, there is massive media disruption with the ever-increasing power of tech giants such as Facebook, Apple, Amazon and Google. There are important direct implications for Australians’ quality of life and for the health of Australian democracy. The appalling bushfires and Covid-19 have underlined the essential role of the ABC. And, in an era of fake news, the ABC plays a vital role as a trusted source of news and information. How does democracy work if citizens are not aware of what is happening or are misinformed?
