It is a great honour to be have Nicholas Cowdery AO as our distinguished speaker address our club on this occasion.

Nicholas Cowdery AO QC has spent 50 years in criminal justice in various capacities. He has been a public defender, a barrister, an acting Judge and for 16 ½ years was Director of Public Prosecutions for NSW. He is a former President of the International Association of Prosecutors and now chairs its Senate. He is an Adjunct Professor of Law and a Visiting Professorial Fellow at several universities in NSW and teaches criminal law courses.  He is now President of the NSW Council for Civil Liberties.  He is a member of the National Human Rights Committee of the Law Council of Australia and the Criminal Law Committee of the NSW Bar Association.

“Criminal laws and procedures are constantly changing as the composition of the community changes along with its attitudes to particular conduct, as technology throws up new challenges, as procedures are refined over time and as politicians develop policies to deal with such matters. This talk will touch upon some present challenges that are under consideration in NSW and will include discussion of drug law reform, voluntary assisted dying, Aboriginal incarceration, a Federal anti-corruption commission and a bill of rights for Australia (among other possibilities). There will be time for questions and discussion.”
