Lesley was the initiator of The Friendship Project which included experts in loneliness from across Australia.  These included
Dr Michele Lim recently launched the Lane Cove End Loneliness Initiative.  Lesley briefly shared how she had been awarded a RYLA award years ago and how this had really encouraged her to be a leader.
 
Speaker – Dr Max Dias on Robotic Surgery  Max is the Head of Robotic Surgery(Urology) at the SAN.  He went to the same school as Roger Wescombe.
                 
Robotic surgery is the “cutting edge” of surgery today.  Began in the space age with robotic arm development for the Intl Space Station.  1990 Aesop – voice activated movements by Computer Motion.  Then Zeus –console with robotic arms.  In 2003 - Da Vinci (Intuitive Surgical) & Zeus joined
                 
Now used for ENT/Head & neck, Cardiiothoracic, Urology, Upper GIT Colorectal, O & G surgery.
                 
Advantages: removes need for large incisions,  6 portholes,  4 arms : camera; + CNS + Surgeon console with 3D stereoscopic vision;  3:1 mvt of surgeon to patient; With pedals like driving a car;  with greater freedom of movement.
                 
Saw a video of peeling a grape. Each instrument cost $1000 per use for 10 uses only.  Share price went from $6 to $496 in 18 yrs.  The SAN now has zero costs for instruments.
                 
Future of robotic surgery;
  • Haptics = getting feedback from the body parts
  • Telesugery = surgery at a distance from patient
  • Costs will come down
  • Autonomous cf now Master-Slave

It takes about 1yr to learn how to fully use a machine.  This can be done in a simulator.  About 15 Da Vinci Systems in Sydney at present.
