Topic: DAMN THE DARDENELLES.  THE ROLE OF THE NAVY AT GALLIPOLI AND THE AUSTRALIAN SUBMARINE AE2.

The contribution of the navy, including British, French and Australian vessels, has been largely overlooked under the weight of army narrative. They played a part in the landings, gunfire support, and eventual evacuation.  The submarine AE2 was the first to penetrate the Dardanelles with an extraordinary effect on the whole operation.

Biographic Details:

Jim is a Volunteer Guide at the AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM.  He commenced his relationship with the ANMM in 1992, when he became a Foundation Member of the Museum and in 2010 started working as a Volunteer Guide.

As a guide, his interests are HMB Endeavour, the expedition of 1769-1771 and the people who were on that voyage. The Royal Australian Naval vessels Vampire, Onslow and Advance which are a major part of the ANMM are of equal interest. His guiding activities regularly encompass all of these boats and ships.

Additionally, the special exhibits, which are an integral part of Museum life, provide a stimulating exercise for him to familiarise himself with each one and become an informed guide for whatever is on display.

He has sailed since he was a teenager, still sails competitively and also serves on the Race Committee of his sailing club. It would be no surprise to know that the recreational craft at the Museum have also become part of his Museum knowledge.

In a previous life, Jim was a practising orthodontist, but he has retired from clinical practice.  Teaching orthodontics remains a passion and he holds part time adjunct appointments at the University of Sydney and Charles Sturt University.
