Rotary meeting 19/10/16
Margaret welcomed guests Jane and Warwick Morton to what turned out to be an inspiring meeting.
Past President Jenny announced that:
Swim Club needs volunteers for BBQ on 30 October, starting early. 4 volunteers for each slot.
Ron Tweedie
Updated form on the tables re committee activities.
PP Chris Curtis
Managed to survive the wilds of Margaret River.
Re Small Grants project, got $1000 from Woolgoolga club. [They found it
left over in the president's old shoes or something like that].
Fair funds amounted to $25,000. Well done all.
[we are inspired to do our own BBQ again this year and will continue to grow this asset. Thanks to Adrienne and crew for getting the free use of a magnificent ute section from Bigas to mount the whole exercise. The club needs to organise free sausages and eggs next year to improve the bottom line!]
Sergeant John
A little subdued from his usual boisterous self [probably because he didn't want to shock the guests] John flailed the pockets of transgressors and innocent alike, getting PPs Chris Curtis, DIck Dawes, John Palmer, as well as  SES hero and flood rescuer Vlad (losing his name badge organising the Council personnel assisting the Rotary Fair activities), Rotarians Robyn and Ron for being busy and effective organisers while flying under the radar).
X fines
Dick Dawes for providing fair BBQ transport [Dick has the last vehicle in the club with a towbar]; PP John Donald congratulating Vlad for several instances of heroic exploits in the Forbes/Condobolin floods; PP Phil thanking PP Bob Cartwright for being persistent (I didn't say "pestering") in entreating local member Anthony Roberts to deliver a $30,000 grant for solar panels (lots of them - think about 80) to the Lane Cove (West) community bowling club.
Our delightful President Margaret then introduced Past President Jenny May who was to be our guest speaker. [Jenny is a district committee member of Rotary Health and has been enthusiastic about the great work that RH has been doing for quite a few years, including during her presidency].
Treatment programmes for anxiety in children.
Rotary Health (RH) engages in Scientifically proven programmes for the improvement/prevention of mental health issues.
Australian Rotary Health Gives 2 major scholarships per year totalling $70,000.
Looking for $30 a month from 200 people to support this initiative [calculated at one cup of coffee per day]. Contact Jenny to arrange this donation.
Oncology
Jenny showed us footage of unique RH Research to discover cancer cell proliferation  causes. The overall programme of Australian Rotary Health was presented in the video format and was most enlightening. Their annual income is $4m pa with 70 staff and many volunteers.
Jenny mentioned the various levels of donations. It Commenced as an organisation by looking to research cot deaths. It's research revealed a principle reason why infants were dying.
20-25% of indigenous doctors have come from RH Scholarships. Also supports a number of regional nurses.
Also researches  PTSD and supports sufferers. RH also researches Prevention methods especially in the area of young.suicides.
Felice Jacka  (an RH PhD graduate) connected healthy diets and good mental health. [Scribe: Felice's findings were ground breaking. Featured in Time magazine when her work was released, she turned the treatment of mental illness on its head, with the NY Psychiatric association declaring that ethics now demanded that Natural Medicine be the First consideration treatment of psychiatric illness and drugs second, on the basis of her astounding findings that were collated from all peer review publishing of drug treatments as well as natural interventions over the previous 15 years].
RH is prominent in delivering Scholarships to rural and indigenous health care workers - with a 50% input from governments.
They produce Sports mental health T shirts. [quick - someone get one to a certain tennis player].
Jenny suggested that we could assist by donating or even organising an event. [Now there's a challenge!]
