Cross Fines

Tom Grozier fined ex Queenslander John Palmer for being a Maroon. No, editor Bob, that's MAroon, not mOroon. Unabashed, John cheerfully predicts another decade of Maroon dominance.

GUEST SPEAKER

Jay Allen - melanoma

Jay's inspiring talk took us through a personal Melanoma crisis, recovery, and a determination to "give back" to the organisation that saved his life. He told us that Australia/NZ have jointly 5 times the melanoma that has been reported in the whole of the USA. That means that we have over 100 times the incidence here per capita. He stated that the hole in the ozone layer in Antipodes is far more severe than Northern countries.

[Scribe: the complete ozone layer is about the thickness of a Formica table top. When depleted by fluorocarbons - as in supposedly banned refrigerant and aerosol propellants - it becomes paper thin! sometimes completely perforated. If the deterioration continues, we will all need to walk around in space suits to avoid cancer].

His journey has taken him everywhere, from long-distance fund raising walks, seeing a millionaire donate $50m, to seeing a "miracle" smart-drug brought to light that completely cures widespread cancers by targeting tumours and stifling their blood supply, causing tumour death. Even liver and brain cancers originating as melanoma are susceptible. Astounding science fiction brought to life - and an Aussie invention!

Melanomas can occur on skin that does not receive much sun exposure.

The general warning is that one bad sunburn in early life means that you need an annual examination for early warning.

Forget about tanning up - too dangerous these days.

Questions: I am approaching 80YO and got sunburnt regularly as a kid. I have had no problems. Ans: different times, intact ozone layer then. No refrigerators, let alone fluorocarbon refrigerant gas.

Sunscreen as prevention? No firm evidence so not yet recommended.

PP Phil Dudgeon

Thanks for an enlightening talk. Your dedication is plain to see and your cause is a worthy one that benefits all of us.
